Dragon Jewel!
"Long ago, the Herbivores ruled the land, unhindered by any outside influence. It was a peaceful world. But then one day, dragons began showing up. They seemed to come from the very Earth itself. Fire-breathing dragons shot upward into the sky as a nearby volcano errupted and turned the skies black. Ice-breathing dragons appeared from the snow after the world's largest mountain had an avalanche that shook the very foundation of the mountain range itself. Lightning-breathing dragons zapped through the skies in the midst of a tremendous thunderstorm. The herbivores, with nowhere left to go and no safe haven anymore, scattered, surrenduring the land to the new beasts that had taken over.
For many years, the dragons lived in relative peace with one-another. They had small arguments over boundaries and prey, but nothing that ended up in bloodshed. So fear was a very new emotion to them when a giant meteor-like object blocked out the sun. It sped toward the planet, breaking up into hundreds of pieces as it entered the atmosphere. Evenutally, it landed in the forest, and caused surprisingly little to no damage. Dragons from each of the three clans went to see what it was. What they found was a giant black rock, large enough for three adult dragons to stand on comfortably. But it was hot, which was probably what provoked an ice-dragon to breathe cold air onto it.
The rock shuddered, and a large black shape popped out of the top. It hovered there for a moment before taking the shape of an enormous black dragon, twice the size of any normal dragon. It gave a quick glance to each of the dragons around it, then opened its mouth to speak. As it did so, more black dragons shot into the air around it, soaring off into the distance.
"Creatures of light, from now on, consider yourselves my newest enemies. When the sun sets, it will be the last time the sun ever sees you alive." With that, the gigant black dragon flew off to join the rest of its clan.
A panic arose, with each clan flying back to their own territories to prepare for whatever the Umbral King had in store for them that night. Along the way, they found fragments of the meteor from when it broke through the atmosphere. They were crystals... of course, their purpose was still a mystery, and only time would reveal the answers. But time was against them now..."

Happy Vernal Equinox! « Result #9 on Mar 20, 2009, 5:45am »
Welcome to spring!
Here is some info about it.
The Rite of Spring Vernal equinox occurs on March 20, 2009
by Ann-Marie Imbornoni and Elissa Haney
March 20, 2009, is a date that most of us recognize as symbolic of changing seasons. As we welcome spring, people south of the equator are actually gearing up for the cooler temperatures of autumn.
What Happens at the Equinox?
Far from being an arbitrary indicator of the changing seasons, March 20 (March 21 in some years) is significant for astronomical reasons. On March 20, 2009, at precisely 7:44 A.M. EDT (March 20, 11:44 Universal Time), the Sun will cross directly over the Earth's equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, this is the moment of the autumnal equinox.
Equinox Means "Equal Night"
Translated literally, equinox means "equal night." Because the sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world during the equinoxes. A second equinox occurs each year on September 22 or 23; in 2009, it will be on September 22 at 17:18 P.M. EDT (21:18 UT). This date will mark the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the Southern (vernal denotes "spring").
Reasons for the Seasons
These brief but monumental moments owe their significance to the 23.4 degree tilt of the Earth's axis. Because of the tilt, we receive the Sun's rays most directly in the summer. In the winter, when we are tilted away from the Sun, the rays pass through the atmosphere at a greater slant, bringing lower temperatures. If the Earth rotated on an axis perpendicular to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, there would be no variation in day lengths or temperatures throughout the year, and we would not have seasons.
Rituals and Traditions
Modern astronomy aside, people have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years. There is no shortage of rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of spring. Many early peoples celebrated for the basic reason that their food supplies would soon be restored. The date is significant in Christianity because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. It is also probably no coincidence that early Egyptians built the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising Sun on the day of the vernal equinox.
The first day of spring also marks the beginning of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. The celebration lasts 13 days and is rooted in the 3,000-year-old tradition of Zorastrianism.

I may have to discontinue The Outer Island Board soon 'cuz we aren't getting the traffic. The reason why is 'cuz of The Black Fish Tavern on The Official Dinotopia Message Board. We just can't keep it going. The site will be missed. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can keep it going, post them here or on the Outer Island Thread that Tim made on The Official Dinotopia Message Board. If not, I will be closing up shoppe and maybe using it as a backup or and archive board of some kind. Thank all of you Who use The Outer Island Board.
